JULIA GJERTSEN

I'm a pianist, composer, and producer based in Oslo. I make music that falls somewhere between ambient and modern classical, mostly built around the piano & electronics.

I spent some of my early years in Northern Norway, where the sun doesn't follow the usual schedule. Winter swallows the light, and summer refuses to let it go. I think that got into the music I create somehow. Most of what I make comes from things I can't quite explain with words. Memories, places, feelings, moments from nature and life, the way I see the world. My music is where those things get to exist on their own.

My debut EP, Slow Motion Stories (2012), came from a question: what happens when you slow down in a world that won't. It was the starting point for everything that followed. My first full album, Fragile (2019), went further into that with intimate piano and synths in the background. On Formations (2022), I brought in flute and electronics alongside the piano, and let things open up more. On Shadow Light (2024), the piano takes the lead again, more melody and playing, and less layering.

I've also collaborated with other composers and musicians, including Nico Rosenberg (Distant Fields, 2020; Paisajes Imaginarios, 2022; El miedo no es una opción, 2026), Juha Mäki-Patola (Dive, 2023), and Gustav Davidsson (Wandering Mind, Drifting Weather, 2025). Those projects are a way to explore how my sounds fit together with someone else's vision.
